trying to suss out the class character of the addams family. i think it might not be possible to examine through a marxist lens due to how some of them seem to be semi-immortal and able to make millions through sheer bizarre luck. they don't really collects rent OR work
we do see a stock portfolio owned by fester but we don't know what the stock is in. could be in "addams swamp corporation" and totally valueless. gomez on the B&W show played the stock market but sort of through magic?
i remember him having a tickertape thing he was interested in. but it was never clarified what he was up to. clearly they have family wealth of some kind. but from whence? at some point it's referred to as dubloons?
as i say it's complicated by us not understanding their lifespans. it's possible gomez is literally 700 years old and used to be a pirate. it's not clear. they inherit a lot of things but one gets the impression they're almost inheriting from ... themselves? at times?
honestly one could make an argument that they're living in a really moral way in this sense. sure they inherited a house and grounds but it's not arable land that needs farming. they produce not much but they consume almost nothing either
everything they buy or own seems to have come to them through family networks and sort of disregulated black market channels. one could call that a form of autonomous dual power type thing. also they're ghouls so
i suppose we could read them as true libertarians. they don't seem to know what money is or interact with it in any way
every once in a while they reference a left wing leader but it's in the same mouthful as a right wing tyrant. they seem to respect authoritarianism for its brutality and nothing else. in that sense we'd again call them libertarians but regrettably right ones
but they're also wildly socially liberal. the intuitively understand and respect all relationships and identities. they're feminists clearly, they believe in civic responsibility and community involvement and the public schools
THEY DO KEEP LURCH THO. and Thing. i'm not sure about the relative personhood of Thing. we could question Lurch's appointment. he may be a random cousin who had an issue living independently. he could have been *created* but he does seem to feel?
anyway the mythos intentionally obscures and occludes information about their lifespan so it's impossible to say. it's very possible they built that house themselves in the year 10,000 BCE. their wealth could be rubies that rained from heaven.
it's so hard to tell if they hate these things because they're "new money" or because they're capitalist
of course we see wednesday glorifying the french revolution but that wouldn't be incongruous with any number of modern american libertarian ghouls
an interesting thing is that the main villains in every film are money-grubbers. why is this, tho? are they evil because they are capitalist OR because they steal from the addams family? are they villains for their motives or their actions? and is the perspective of mortician?
an interesting thing to think about is that their main "power" as it were, as a family, seems to be Extreme Luck. they can't be hurt by knives as they glance off their skin at the last second. gomez catches the baby out the window by looking for rain. WHAT IF-
what if that meant their economic wealth was simply due to generations of not being affected by other people's economic woes? what if their preternatural good luck also protected them from various depressions and revolutions etc?
they have people in their families who are idk sentient plants, liches, demigods, things like that, but they aren't themselves. maybe just when everyone else's ship sank, theirs sailed. they were first in line at the back run.
brian posits, what if the addams family is "an incidental thing to the driving forces of history" similar to ... the hobbits? like they've always been bystanders. the story was always about elves or humans or dwarves but the addams family was never explicitly made by any God
brian says, what if it's not that the addams family is "lucky" it's just that they "aren't cursed" like everyone else? they're an afterthought. during the time of the garden of eden, the addams family were somewhere else. god forgot to curse them too
a thought. is the money fake? is it some sort of "glamour" like does it not exist? is that a comment on the gold standard?
like did gomez and fez conjure a bunch of fake gold in a ritual when they were kids, or did their ancestors do it on the boat, or did the picts do it 12,000 years ago. was it generated from nothing
but at that point what money IS real
