ok maybe controversial take:
aggressive policing of how people are supposed to engage critically with different mental disorders is actively harmful and often infantalizes those who struggle with them
this is not to say you can& #39;t curate your own experience because you absolutely can and you& #39;re completely valid in doing so but trying to set rules for other communities that don& #39;t have the same priorities that you do is not the protective gesture you think it is
idk I& #39;ve spent so long on tumblr and twitter and this extremely narrow interpretation of how one engages with mental disorders that after a certain point it begins to feel patronizing and prescriptive when there& #39;s a lot more grittiness beneath the surface
like there& #39;s such an emphasis on social media on living an ideologically pure life and making sure you take the correct action to fix your aberrant behavior that I beg you, if you& #39;re as extremely online as me, hear my plea: allow yourself to like some problematic things
like the fact i have to even clarify i& #39;m not talking about pedophilia and other gross shit is such an indictment of how we are engaging with the world, it& #39;s automatically assuming the worst in everyone as a reflex, endlessly pessimistic about what we view to be a doomed future
it sucks! it poisons your life! you can& #39;t help but view everything you consume through a very critical lens and you just shave off a portion of that thing you& #39;re enjoying for absolutely no reason
I think constantly about that "woman takes a 30 minute break from being a feminist"
just constantly look to be better. more conscious of how you engage with the world around you. but like, having some messy shit in your life you& #39;re not necessarily proud of ain& #39;t gonna keep you from heaven, it& #39;s not achieving the high score like in the good place
like if i actually started talking critically about my job and talk about labor exploitation and social justice systems i would get mostly blank stares. millions of us are the minority that think about this shit way too much and sometimes that ends up hurting us unexpectedly
shit. be kind to yourself, okay? its truly unprecedented the kind of world we are living in. there are things so much bigger than that weird thing you& #39;re ashamed of liking. forgive yourself for it. enjoy it no less than it deserves.
you are hilariously small in the grand scheme of things. 1 of billions. a singular grain of sand in the grand beach of reality. focus on your inner circles and making them a comfy space on the terms of the people who are in that space, even if they aren& #39;t "correct"
