/9 This is 1 of the ways the public fails to grasp how #CDNmedia functions

In the case of #CBC, the board is often tainted by partisanship but it was replaced by the current govt. Continuing issue is higher placed editors & producers who may still wage political battles within https://twitter.com/DianeMariePosts/status/1309209723166572545
/9 To support that point, I departed from CBC over a dispute about the Occupy movement. I was dispatched to cover the Toronto camp & I wrote that it was peaceful. But CBC maintains the right for editors to re-write & they did that to me, wrongly claiming the event was violent
/9 The exec editor went so far as to use a pic of a bomb exploding in Egypt to represent my Toronto coverage. I disputed this politicized spin printed under my byline & my contract was cancelled on the spot. I also couldn't grieve because they use contracts to evade the union
/9 There is no single magic wand to heal the CBC or #CDNmedia in general & no govt can get to the root of issues within the public broadcaster during one term, even if the issue was prominent. The consequences of media politicization are entrenched through so many layers now
/9 And the public insists on politicizing the CBC from one side or the other (because they own it), depending who's in govt. That's always been true, but Harper did unfathomable damage that pitted everyone against each other & it'll take a decade to undo with concerted effort
/9 At the end of the day, CBC journos are always jumping to someone's whip. There are some FABULOUS producers & reporters who share my work ethic, but it doesn't stop their boss, or their boss, or the big boss from overriding everything with a ghost re-write
/9 Actually, that's the 1st & most important change CBC requires to protect #PressFreedom & thwart political manipulation. It is inexcusable that editors, producers & execs can ghost write material in the name of journos & anchors, fundamentally altering the spirit of a report
/9 To prevent partisan rebranding of the CBC board (that makes it a regular political target), there should be a mandated amount of members from each political party that match their standing in parliament during any given term. That would mitigate the power plays to control it
/9 Contracting journos, photogs, producers & editors should also be abolished, because it makes all those workers beholden to management & unable to defend the truth when it conflicts with anyone's political allegiance. Salaried staff can fire contract staff over sneezing wrong
