This is a common rebuttal to "respect the consensus: What about the wise contrarian that got it right?

But only in hindsight does "ignoring CDC" = "listening to Zeynep Tufekci".

In reality, ignoring CDC = "choosing among MANY even worse options, and one or two better ones." https://twitter.com/imagineterrain/status/1309295174259011585
The right approach is for Tufekci (and the others who endorsed mask-wearing) to continue making their case, for experts to reevaluate evidence, etc.

Meanwhile, we laypeople—reminder: Tufekci is hardly a typical layperson, she does this full time—should listen to the CDC.
Remember Didier Raoult? Dude is a VERY well-respected virologist. If he'd been right about hydroxychloroquine, everyone would be saying "See! Why did we listen to the consensus?"

But with him, as with most cases, betting with consensus is the way to go.
