I have to credit my younger brother for my love for Developmental Biology. So here's a thread in the spirit of #BlackInDevelopmental #BlackinCMDBio
Iāve always had questions about everything! But when I was 6, my mom was pregnant with my first younger brother. The doctor gave her some pamphlets describing the development of the baby
The pictures were so vivid, and the information was so descriptive.
I read and reread the pamphlets.
I asked questions.
I. Fell. In. Love.

So I knew I was fascinated with science. But I grew up in rural Mississippi, and there isnāt access to a lot of educational opportunities. My parents worked really hard to drive me places and find online material to increase my knowledge
I thought I needed to become an OB/Gyn to fulfill my interests and passions. So when I started undergrad at Rice in 2015, I didnāt know anything about scientific research, PhDs, or research job opportunities.
I had no interest in research at all. When I thought of people in labs, I only saw white menā¦so I didnāt think that was for me.
But I learned more about research freshman year. Joined @envelopinglayer ās lab my sophomore year studying the snail embryos. I felt the same curiosity and fascination that I felt as a 6 year old. I had been chasing that wonder, and I felt like I finally found it again
Since then, Iāve also become interested in genetics, evolutionary biology, and biochemistry. I love understanding how the micro processes and pathways of cells allow for large scale changes that we can visualize at the organismal level
Thatās a snippet of me. Iāve loved every part of this journey.
Iām so grateful to my mentors, especially @envelopinglayer and @___SDB___ mentors, for their continuous reassurance in my abilities to succeed and grow as a scientist
& thanks to my brother for the pamphlets
