OpenHarmony traces its lineage to FreeBSD, not Android or Linux. Thus it's closer to iOS, which also leveraged FreeBSD.

Nice thing about open source is you can verify these things by just rummaging through the code, as I did, on Gitee.

OpenHarmony is the anchor project of the OpenAtom Foundation, a Huawei-led open source foundation--1st of it's kind in China.

OpenAtom hosts 7 projects, but lacks a tech theme (like Linux F or CNCF) or strong culture (like ASF). Far too young/early to know if it'll be effective.
The lazy conclusion is to poo poo Huawei's efforts as a fool’s errand, since many things are working against it:

- secretive ownership
- OpenAtom lacks transparent governance
- just being Chinese

But a couple of things could work in its favor...
Ultimately, this may be a multi-century (not decades) Game of Go.

Ren Zhengfei famously proclaimed a < 300 years timeline to catch up to iOS & Android. Huawei has $53B cash on hand to weather some very lean years (not incl possible gov't subsidies)
