Here are my thoughts on the upcoming PAC-12 football season.
On the one hand, I worry for these student athletes, and I’m bothered by the hypocrisy of leaving non-athletes at home but welcoming football players (money makers) back, obviously without compensation.
OTOH, I’ll be watching all the games. The beauty of college football is that it offers us the chance to watch young men pursue their dreams, young men who at least to a degree share some of our own college experiences — living in the same dorms, hopping in the same fountains.
I’ve been lucky enough to meet several Stanford football players. I’ve listened to the reverence in their quiet voices as they discuss the legends who’ve come before them and seen the light dance in their eyes as they share goals for the season ahead.
Even though I wonder if this is the right decision, there’s no way I can miss watching these young men in the Cardinal and White. There’s no way I can’t support them.
And so for seven Saturdays this November and December, I’ll be on the couch watching and cheering. Every third down conversion, every tackle for loss, every end zone fade. I’ll be there.
