Whenever young musicians ask my opinion on indies vs. majors, I pose a simple question to them: Are you an artist or are you an act?
Because that really determines everything.
And understand, there’s no wrong answer to that question and one path isn’t any more noble than the other. But your intentions have to be clear.
If you wanna make the 2020 equivalent of Nation of Millions, the major label system probably won’t work out for you. But if you wanna write the next Old Town Road? A record like that can only go but so far independently. Be clear about your desires.
And if you’re just starting out and can’t answer the “artist/act” question, it’s ok. Just keep creating and DON’T SIGN ANYTHING. There’s no greater hell than being contractually bound and still trying to figure out who you are.
