I turned 22 today.

In those years, I've traveled the world, experienced heartbreak, played at the top level of my sport, and partied everywhere.

I've learned a lot, but I've got a lot of time to experience more life.

Here are 22 Lessons from my 22 years ✌🏼✌🏼
1. Be your own best friend

You will never spend as much time with anyone as you do with yourself.

Practice positive self-talk. Be supportive. Be loving. Change yourself for the better.

Repeat: "I love myself" every day.

You do have that choice.
2. Seek discomfort

In hindsight, the moments I was anxious or uncomfortable forced immense growth:

- Moving from Japan to America
- Leading a college soccer team
- Expressing opinions on Twitter

Chase positive anxiety.

It made me a better citizen, captain, and thinker.
3. Get fit

My perspective on fitness shifted after my sports career ended.

I no longer have to run a 5-minute mile.

All I want - what we should all want - is a mobile body you're proud of.

If you can move around and you like what you see in the mirror, you're golden.
4. Have an unbreakable circle

Whether it be your family, mates or network

The people you surround yourself with will be the greatest influence on your life.

Make your circle full of:

Love. Integrity. Loyalty. Motivation. Fun.

Real ones will support you through it all.
5. See your parents more

I've gone all of 2020 without seeing my parents.

COVID made it impossible for me to go home.

If you're blessed to live in the same country as your parents, go see them.

Treasure each moment spent together.

Hug them tighter next time you do.
6. Do everything excellently

- Tying your shoes
- Playing board games
- Doing your work

Do everything with extreme attention to detail.

If your goal is to improve, why not apply it to every part of your life?

Normalize an exceptional mindset.

Stretch yourself into the mold.
7. Be kind

I’ve been bullied. I also bullied.

I hated the bully.

Nothing good comes from non-compromising people.

@naval said “the world just reflects your feelings back at you.”

8. Have more conversations

Not just with friends or colleagues - but strangers!

The infinite possibilities of a strangers' perspective are invaluable.

Share ideas. Defend ideas. Get new perspectives.

Speaking with strangers has given me more direction in my life than school.
9. Do more pull-ups

Sinple, really.

Great for posture. Great to look big.

Just an overall W of an exercise.
10. Embrace compound interest

Find 2-3 things you want to spend doing every day.

- Writing
- Working out
- Spending time with your girl

In time, they will provide exponential returns.

Key words: “In time”.

You must put in the time.
11. Participate in team sports

I've learned many of life's lessons through soccer:

- Communication
- Collaboration
- Leadership
- Delegation

Team sports is a beta test for your ability to work in high-stress environments.

Experience team comradery - the feeling is unmatched.
12. Travel as much as you can

COVID has made me miss travel more than anything.

A new country can completely change your perspectives on the mundaneness of daily life.

Eat new food. Go to new places. Talk to new people.

"When in Rome..."
13. Know more than one language

I’m blessed to be raised with two languages.

Thinking in a different language gives you a unique perspective on situations.

And instead of pointing at things to order, you can use your words.

Language is beautiful.

Learn more of them.
14. Say yes to experiences, no to material things

Go hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Go clubbing in Berlin.

Go smoke weed in Amsterdam.

These memories will last you a lifetime.

But that new sports car you got? That'll just be another car in 6 months.
15. Have mentors, sidekicks & pupils

Mentors have been there before. They're a source of guidance & wisdom.

Sidekicks are with you on the journey. Push each other. Healthy competition is good.

Pupils are those you are leading. Guide them like your mentor does for you.
16. Peace of mind >>>

Distractions in your life fog up mental clarity.

Cut things out that don’t help you with this:

- Mainstream news
- Toxic “friends”
- Porn

You have the choice to curate your inputs.
17. You’ll never be ready, so just start

I created Twitter and Substack on the same day and posted my first blog post on a whim.

I didn’t feel ready. I just did it.

But starting allowed me to refine & make it better.

Whatever it is you're waiting for - don't.

Just. Start.
18. Enjoy what you have when you have it

What you love most in life can be taken away from you in an instant.

We saw this with COVID.

Appreciate the things you enjoy, every moment.

And once it’s gone, know that you got everything you could out of it.
19. Pour all of yourself into what you love

Whether that’d be your work, your partner, your family, your hobbies.

It will give back to you in ways you can’t imagine.
20. Eat good food (go to 🇯🇵)
21. Stop comparing yourself to others

Life is a one-player game.

It's pointless to compare yourself with others.

We're going at different speeds in different directions.

Focus on yourself.

The only way you lose is to lose your direction.

Be on the path & stay on it.
22. Do everything once

Except heroine.

Remember that interview you were nervous about?

It ended up going not so bad, right?

We're often more scared of the outcome of something rather than the thing itself.
I hope you got something valuable from this.

21 showed me a path.

In 22, I'll build upon that path.

Thank you to everyone who's wished me well.

I hope to make you all very proud, very soon.
