It's charming, a little too long, and in the top tier of Netflix movies. 'Enola Holmes' is an entertaining kids movie that I think adults will get a kick out of too. It doesn't talk down to its audience and tries some fresh stuff (even if it's not as progressive as it thinks)...
Not a film for fans of the 'Sherlock Holmes' novels, it may be for fans of the 'Enola Holmes' YA novels. It's such a removed reinvention that the Holmes family might aswell be generic quirky Victorians, but with such a vast icon I don't think that kinda variety is a bad thing...
Having said that, everyone is firing charisma in the flick and (I can't help say it as a Sherlock Holmes fan) Henry Cavill puts in a neat, twinkling performance. In fact everyone is. A less analytical mind will certainly enjoy the 2 hours of Bobbie Brown elevating exposition...
If any Netflix film spawns a franchise it SHOULD be this - Hopefully with more ties to the classic novels. I know the YA source has an audience, I haven't read them but seems they're selling what they'd want, but right now it's a 'Narnia' when it could be a 'Harry Potter'...
It's good, kills a night in a pandemic and I do recommend it, but it could be great and I hope we get to that. Pleasantly so I think it's finally the right direction for Netflix moving towards family orientated 'blockbuster' type entertainment that doesn't feel cheap...
Oh and if you are going into the movie as a 'Sherlock' fan and not an 'Enola' fan, here's a warning: There's no Watson. Completely out of the picture. Nonexistent. If they really want a progressive flick I DEMAND we get Henry Cavill shagging a cute moustached doctor DAMN IT!...
Like I'm sorry to bang on about it, the movie has nothing to do with it and never false advertised (this is not serious criticism), but you don't make Henry Cavill look this HOT in Victorian garb and then remove the character's iconic gay flatmate!? LIKE COME ON!...
COME ONNN!?!...
I KNOW I can get some 'Man from U.N.C.L.E.' fans on my side!... #HammerForDrWatson
