We're starting NOW! https://twitter.com/sajahq/status/1309247487056674816
. @PiyaSRoy is from the UK and covered everything at Reuters in L.A. She then met with editors at Variety where she brought up concerns about the very white, male newsroom culture to the EIC
. @piyasroy: After Variety's EIC wrote a blog post as BLM protests restarted this past June about how she wasn't aware of newsroom diversity issues before but was at that point, I spoke out because I had that exact conversation with her 6 years ago. She knew.
. @speakpatrice: Buzzfeed is a predominantly white media org with a large reach...as layoffs moved me over to a new team, things fell apart. What Black writers publish may not get the same clicks or audience as what white writers do, especially in the beauty and culture space.
. @SpeakPatrice: Black peers and I had to fight so much for our stories, our audience, a resource group for us, etc. Companies love to accept accolades without showing the work and struggle of their own Black employees. It all came to a head this summer on Blackout Tuesday
. @prachigu: When I was covering the 2016 election for http://Cosmopolitan.com  I was told there was no comp time for OT and I was paid less than my white, female predecessor. I felt tokenized as the brown/Indian woman when the PR person told me my "look is on trend"
. @prachigu: I wasn't allowed to talk about a Trump op-ed because it was deemed 'controversial' while other white male writers in the same org were allowed to discuss Trump. It wasn't the president that was controversial, it was me.
None of our panelists have had trouble freelancing through the pandemic because they spoke out. None of them regret speaking out and telling their story to the world
