Pretty wild how some on the left treated Corey Johnson during city budget negotiations & in the deal's aftermath, through today when he dropped from the mayoral race. He pushed the city left on a variety of fronts, passed some major progressive items by overpowering the mayor...
...many of those accomplishments appear forgotten b/c he compromised on the NYPD budget, in part standing down to Council members of color who didn't want his foot so heavy on the defund gas & b/c the ground has shifted on the Rikers/new jails debate.
In part what we've again seen is how challenging it can be to be City Council speaker & (eye a) run for mayor, where you do actually have to take stands, find compromise, negotiate a budget, etc. & Johnson's record over the last few years is pretty full of progressive wins.
Anyway, plenty more to be said on all this, but as of now there's no one running for mayor who has actually accomplished as many major progressive things for the city in recent years as Johnson. So we'll see what the policy platforms & promises look like, but that's just a fact.
