There& #39;s some good info in this thread. But, there& #39;s also a bunch of ways to make your product stand out and not pay a lot for it and I& #39;m going to tell you how.

I& #39;m a professional artist, graphic designer and layout artist that has worked on tons of DMs Guild projects. https://twitter.com/justice_arman/status/1309223986493087746">https://twitter.com/justice_a...
Part 1: Art:
It& #39;s important! Commissioning an artist is great, but expensive. Check out stock art in places other that Drive Thru RPG. Adobe stock is a good go to that doesn& #39;t get as much use and there& #39;s one artist in particular there with a huge catalogue of fantasy stuff that..
I know a few DMs Guild creators use for cover art alllll the time.

Write for the Art:
Finding cover art to your adventure is hard. What& #39;s easier is finding a piece of sotck art you like and writing an adventure around it, or finding a piece of character art and making an NPC.
There are several anthologies (one of which I wrote for), which did this exact thing and were very successful.

Inline Art:
Finding inline art to match a character or item or monster can be difficult and a lot of the free stuff is janky. BUT, there are alternatives...
Instead of looking for something that& #39;s going to match a specific thing in your adventure, find art that matches the mood or theme. Something that displays the scenery, or an element that appears in a description. Small art pieces of mushrooms, branches, birds, etc. are easy...
to find on free stock art websites, especially if you go for the plain line art ones. USE LINE ART for inlines. There& #39;s so much of it and a lot of it is free.
Also this website collects all the other free stock art websites on it : http://thestocks.im/ ">https://thestocks.im/">...
PART 2: DESIGN TIPS
There are little things you can do to lift up your design and make it look more polished even if you don& #39;t have a clue about design. We& #39;ll talk about this more later, but text can serve the same purpose as art, to break up a page, if you use it correctly.
Title and Heading Styles:
Create heading styles and use cool fonts for them. Our brains have been programmed to react to certain kinds of fonts (think about the fonts used for horror movies or Chinese restaurant ads) so the fonts you use for a header can communicate information..
Also, give your paragraphs room to breathe. some space before headings and after paragraphs makes it feel less like reading a text document.

Boxes and Boxed Text:
I& #39;m not going to get into the read aloud text thing here, but having text that is in boxes, whether it& #39;s a...
description, point form details of a place, or read aloud text, breaks apart the page in the same way art does.

Borders and Backgrounds:
Small things make a difference. You don& #39;t need to have a big fancy layout to make something look professional. A simple border made up of...
a couple lines and a page number will do wonders for this. But if you want something fancier, you can find premade borders and backgrounds on the same free stock art websites. A lot of them are a bit janky, but there& #39;s always something there. You can also take a small piece of...
inline art of leaves or mushrooms or something like that and copy and paste it a couple times into a decent border (something I& #39;ve definitely done).

Hopefully this helps someone feel a little less stuck behind a pay wall.
Quick addition I forgot to bring up:
Photography:
It& #39;s not the norm to use photography for RPG products, but you CAN do it. And there are lots of period specific photo packs out there. Ironsworn is a free RPG that used photography EXTREMELY WELL, with a fairly minimal design...
It& #39;s a great game in it& #39;s own right, but does a number of the things I& #39;ve mentioned very well. And it& #39;s free, so you can just download it and have a look and then play it because it& #39;s a good game.
