I had a splendid time visiting the famous Deribe Palace in Maiduguri. When I was child, my father used to take us there to visit his friend and we would watch people troupe every Friday to the Grand Mosque and have a buffet of the best foods.
For people who grew up in Maiduguri, this house was viewed as more glamorous than the Queens castle in England. It was our own castle in the desert. Many people including Princess Diana visited in its hay days. Mai Deribe was one of the wealthiest men in Nigeria at the time.
Some parts of the Deribe Palace are based on the Sultan of Brunei's palace according to hearsay. It was custom made and took ten years build.
Some parts are Moroccan, others Italian and French style. There is a gold plated room. There was also a private jet and a slew of chefs.

There is a carpet with Mai Deribe's name written on it. Custom made designs were made of some structures with liquid gold. Here's a long article: https://dailytrust.com/inside-mai-deribes-gold-house

Everything in the Deribe Palace is meticulously and intricately designed. The most beautiful for me are the different stunning styles of tiles decorating every room. #bitsofborno #theafricathemediawontshowyou

Mai Deribe was of an era when the wealthy people cared for the community. I remember many buffet style lunches for the local community every Friday after prayers in his grand mosque. He also employed thousands in his companies. #bitsofborno #yerwafato

Because the Deribe Palace was a huge property with different sections, including a pool side, maintenance cost millions when he was alive. Currently, one of his sons as well as many of their relatives who fled the Boko Haram attacks live in some parts of the house. #BitsofBorno
