THREAD: follow-up thread to expand on his identity bc I've been watching 304...(read the 1st thread 1st)
S1&2: #Lucifer fights against what ppl define him as, even more as Chloe sees him for him and he starts to think he can be himself... 1/21
It almost falls apart in 112 when #Lucifer gets framed for smth literally evil and Chloe tries to arrest him. He starts thinking he's doomed to be defined as this evil being if even SHE believes it, he can't escape it. He gives up and tries to go back to Hell... 2/21
S2: Here comes Mum for whom he is NOT the Devil but her son, her lightbringer. Questioning why #Lucifer works in law enforcement and still punishes as, for her, this is part of being the Devil and that is not him but his Father's wishes for him 3/21
#Lucifer struggles throughout the ep w/ her questions but finally understands that he can actually enjoy parts of his "forced" Devil role and make them his. He then keeps growing into himself in S2 while re-accepting the parts of the Devil he wants as himself 4/21
S2 also sees the arrival of Ella who, ofc, takes his Devil schtick as joke but more importantly doesn't believe in the usual definition of the Devil despite her faith... She doesn't define #Lucifer as the Devil, ofc, but also has her own interpretation of it... 5/21
so that makes 2 characters who refuse to define #Lucifer as the Devil and/or actually challenge what the Devil is defined as, giving it a whole new meaning! 6/21
S3: #Lucifer loses the biggest part of his Devil identity=Devil face and spiral into an identity crisis. Bc, again, WHO IS HE IF NOT THE DEVIL? He works actively to try to regain this identity thru deals, punishments, tryna anger Dad again... even if that's not him anymore! 7/21
The whole season is abt his identity. 304 end scene brought this thread lol. You rly see him struggle the most w/ it in S3. #Lucifer has been defined by this "You're the Devil" for so long, he doesn't who he is without it. 8/21
Ofc, now that Linda is in the know, she pinpoints what the problem is w/ his identity but he doesn't hear it lol. That's the issue with his identity crisis, #Lucifer isn't the one who defines himself, contrary to what he says, he lets other factors/ppl tell him who he is... 9/21
As S3 reaches its end, Chloe actively rejects the Devil identity and he too starts seeing himself thru her eyes and believes for a brief second that he can be his own self, that he can NOT be the Devil (and then it all crumbles down lol) #Lucifer 10/21
Also thru all the seasons, #Lucifer likes to see himself thru her eyes a lot. Her opinion of him is the most important one. It motivates a lot of his changes and makes him thrive to be this better version of him that she sees, until it starts tearing him apart in S4.... 11/21
S4: after the reveal, Chloe struggles w/ his identity. She briefly defines him as that proverbial Devil like everybody else (BUT YOU SAID "NOT TO ME"😭😭😭😭) but still struggles to reconcile that w/ the man she knows #Lucifer is. (These caps physically HURT me 😭) 12/21
Meanwhile, #Lucifer is once again struggling, trying to re-fit in the mold of his old Devil self, as Eve defines him. At 1st she defines it as the fun Devil she met in the garden: so back to parties, drugs and orgies bc that's what she expects from him... 13/21
Then Eve defines the Devil as the punisher she mistakingly thinks he was & is supposed to be. Doesn't even know what kind of punisher, probably assumes from stories! Strength, beatings, no limits and still fun! Unknowingly pushes #Lucifer over the edge and worsen his crisis 14/21
#Lucifer applies himself to being this version of the Devil, the punisher, until he starts loosing himself in it and crosses lines...15/21
Chloe, for her part, sees the good man that #Lucifer is again (partner&friend) and can't fully fit it w/ the Devil persona so she starts looking at his angel side which helps but in the end contributes to tear him apart, makes him feel like she still doesn't see the real him.16/21
He likes to see himself in her eyes but he realizes that the person she sees (until end of S4) is a better idolized version of him, not the real him and that's what hurts him in S4. 17/21
And I'm gonna stop here cause I can keep writing forever abt how everyone tells #Lucifer "You're the Devil" and they never know what it means and they never mean the same thing, even L. himself! It's an ongoing them even in #LuciferSeason5 . Maybe I'll pick this up later! 🤷‍♀️18/21
Also, I'll refrain from expanding on how, for #Lucifer , at times consciously and others unconsciously, the "Devil" means a monster and how it is actually tied to his self-hate bc I could be here for days. 😂😂 19/21
Everybody's understanding of who #Lucifer is and of the meaning of "the Devil" evolves throughout the seasons but Chloe is the one character that rly works at trying to understand who he is beyond "the Devil" before and after the reveal. 20/21
(and ofc Linda sees way beyond it but it kinda goes with her job as his therapist lol!) But apart from that, it sometimes feels like none of #Lucifer 's friends know him (even rly old friends like Maze or his brother in the 1st seasons, Mum, all his other siblings, Eve...) 21/21
