Commenting and analyzing the "holes" of the movie The Last.

A thread
First of all, we have two formats: movie and novel. The movie was the first movie considerated to be part of the canon storyline, setted between chapters 699 and 700. This was confirmed by Kishimoto, who was heavily involved with the development of the project.
The Last movie is directed by Tsuneo Kobayashi, the screenwritter was Maruo Kyôzuka, while Kishimoto provided the story supervision and characters designs. The film premiere was on 6 December, 2014.
The first teaser was released on 31 July, 2014. The second teaser was released on 30 October, 2014. According to this trailers, the plot is still unknown, nothing implies a romance nor a movie that revolves around Team 7.
The official trailer was released on 31 October, 2014. You can see Hinata a few times and what seems very reveling dialogues between Naruto and Hinata. This trailer implies that Hinata will have an important role on the movie.
I want to show this evidence because some people say they felt ripped off with the movie because they didn't expect the romance plot.
If you took for granted the plot and thought it was going to be about Team 7 or whatever, that isn't fault of the marketing, but yours to assume things, because at no time, the trailers implied anything it wasn't, quite the opposite.
Not to mention the articles that speculated about Hinata being the heroine of the movie, leaked images, the main movie poster slogan which said: "The last story is, love for the first time"
Promotional posters saying: "The blank period not covered in the original story unfolds in The Last. A story of the boy who was once a dropout, the hero, the last story of Uzumaki Naruto is, LOVE". All this was revealed before the premiere in theaters.
After knowing all this, do people still use as an excuse that the movie wasn't what they expected? The trailers and leaks couldn't make it more obvious.
The novelization was based on the film and was written by Mario Kyôzuka, who was also the screenwritter of the movie, and was released by Shueisha two days after the film's release, on 8 December, 2014.
Having clarified those details, we move on to the "holes" of the movie.
- Small Naruto and Hinata friends flashback

Complaints about the movie showing Naruto and Hinata being friends since before the Academy time and that the origin of Hinata's feelings for Naruto were changed from the manga.
That's not true. The film used the flashback from the anime Shippuden 166 and slightly modified it. The concept is the same, Naruto defends Hinata from some children and she is amazed by his courage and strength despite being a loser.
Even she said this in manga, it's the same feeling. The only thing that changed was the addition of the scarf and that was Kishimoto's idea from his own experience in romance.
Nothing suggests they became friends after that flashback, it merely shows their first interaction, which greatly impacted Hinata. Regarding Hinata's feelings, it doesn't change the origin of her feelings for Naruto, simply because they were never specified in manga.
Manga merely shows flashbacks of Hinata watching Naruto from afar or how much his influence changed her. It's never shown the first time they met, therefore, the flashback shown in The Last isn't a hole that changes manga.
- Small Naruto using Shadow Clones

The Shadow Clone is not a secret technique, in fact, it's a common technique among ninjas. Minato, Kakashi, Deidara, Sasuke or Kiba are shown using it in manga.
The secret technique was Multiple Shadow Clones, that was what Naruto learned when he stole the scroll. Besides, he didn't even know how to do the jutsu properly, so it really doesn't matter. It's possible he saw a ninja using it and he wanted to act taugh in front of the bullies.
- Hinata can't climb walls

When she meets Toneri for the first time,he used green orbs that absorb chakra, causing her to pass out.Moments later she states "her body is going numb",she couldn't climb because she was losing her chakra so that's why she had to hold onto the scarf.
Even later, Toneri uses these green orbs against Naruto, almost absorbing all his chakra.
- A jinchuriki cannot get trapped in a gengutsu

They can get caught under a gengutsu, they are not inmune to them. It's the bijuu who help them escape from the gengutsu, just like we saw in manga with Killer B. Even bijuus can get caught, like when Sasuke controlled all bijuus.
Even with their bijuu support, they can be caught in a gengutsu depending on its level. Despite Killer B's boldy statement about jinchuriki being inmute to gengutsu if they controlled their beasts, manga itself proved this wrong.
Sasuke was able to enter Kurama's mind, Obito placed Kurama under a gengutsu while still inside Kushina, Killer B was caught by Infinite Tsukuyomi.
Yagura was considered a perfect jinchuriki, just like Killer B, and he was controlled by Obito for years. Naruto himself was in danger of Infinite Tsukuyomi despite being in sync with Kurama, it was thanks to Sasuke's Susanoo that he wasn't caught.
Based on everything we saw in manga, the conclusion is that even perfect jinchurikis can be caught in powerful gengutsus, despite being highly resistant to them. In The Last, Naruto is caught in the gengutsu of an alien. It's not a hole because manga itself proved it's possible.
- Sakura is released from gengutsu

She was caught in the gengutsu too. But, according to the novel, she was able to release herself after seeing an illusion of Sasuke smiling at her. After that, she is inmeditely aware that's a gengutsu and release herself.
Unlike her, Naruto was totally lost in his memories and Hinata's, besides that he's having an important revelation for himself. Many things are going through his mind in this moment.
- Naruto falls in love in a gengutsu

He doesn't fall in love in a gengutsu, but realizes he was already in love with her. This is implied both in movie and novel.
In this thread i explain it in more detail this moment:

The gengutsu helps Naruto to understand and put in context what he already felt for Hinata. To understand the difference between romantic love and loving sweets or ramen. He thought that the feeling of romance was the same as when you eat your favorite food.
Naruto loves ramen, it makes him happy and feel warm. When Naruto, subconsciously, compares Hinata with ramen, he is admitting to himself that Hinata conveys to him the same as ramen, love and happiness.
Naruto fell in love with Hinata throughout the manga. It was a slow process but that connection and bond between them was always there. Kishimoto even said: "They connected so strongly they could communicate through their eyes".
Hinata's feelings were always obvious and it's clear that she was someone special for Naruto because he acted different with her, she affected him deeply. He almost dropped everything in the middle of a war, just hearing her thoughts,if it weren't for Sasuke telling him not to go.
When he saw Hinata "dead" he was so desperate that he entered directly his 6 tails state, he lost his will to live to the point he was willing to release the kyubi, which would cause the destrucction of everything. He managed not to harm her during this fight.
And he cried tears of joy when he knew SHE (and the village) were ok, feeling her chakra while grabbing his heart. Well, this made it pretty clear to me what were Naruto's feelings for her.
She always had a special place in his heart and realized how much he loved her when he became an adult. She always was his emotional clutch.
- It's plot convenience they traveled on the same bird.

When Kakashi assigns the mission to rescue Hanabi, he allows Hinata to participate to attract the enemy, since she is the target, and Naruto should protect her because he's the strongest. That's why they flew together.
- Naruto depressed is OOC

He has already been depressed and defeated in manga. When he found out that Konoha wanted to kill Sasuke or when Obito almost manipulated him. We have already seen him at his lowest point. It's the first time he feels this and what is to be heartbroken.
- Naruto liked Sakura for competition.

This has been corroborated countless of times, so i'll be brief. He never really liked Sakura, he was desperate for the attention and the affection Sasuke had. He had everything Naruto wanted.
Sakura never provoked passionate or intense feelings in Naruto. It was a superficial crush based on his rivalry with Sasuke that dissapeared over time.
Manga and Kishimoto supported this. The author said that scene it was HIS answer to the people who still had doubts after the end of the series and besides, if the rivalry "excuse" was contradictory with the manga, Kishi wouldn't say it's one of his favorites scenes of the movie.
Some people usually mentions that when Sakura reveals that Naruto just wanted to compete with Sasuke, Naruto doesn't say anything because he doesn't agree with her or something like that.
Well, that's not true, it wouldn't make sense and the novel shows Naruto's thoughts, which agree with what Sakura said: Hinata is his first love and the person he TRULY loved.
- Naruto confessed to Sakura in the past

As a result of the previous scene and what Sakura says, some people thought that Naruto confessed to her. That's not true. Sakura never implies that Naruto confessed.
In japanese she says: "In the old days, do you remember when you always said you liked me?" She is remembering when Naruto used to ask her out or calling her attention, nothing makes you think that Naruto confessed to her.
- Hamura chakra movie vs novel

It turns out that in the novel is not mentioned Hinata receiving Hamura's chakra. That scene where Hinata refills Naruto's chakra doesn't happen in the novel, it's Kurama who saved them when Toneri attacked them again.
Movie and novel complement each other but in case of contradictions or changes, the movie will always prevail since it came before and Kishimoto himself worked directly in it.
- Hinata needs Naruto to destroy the Tenseigan

This is clealry a hole and, from my point of view, very stupid, since Hamura himself says that only she can destroy the Tenseigan, he never mentioned anything about needing a lot of chakra to destroy it.
It should have been Hinata the one who destroyed it. But i think they just wanted a NaruHina moment and a combo. After all, Naruto is the main character and they wanted that both, Naruto and Hinata, saved the world together, to make it more epic, i guess.
- The Rasen Shuriken is blue

In fact, it was the anime who depicted Rasen Shuriken with a blue color but the colored version of the manga and The Last depicted it as yellow/orange, which is its original color.
- Chakra cannon

I don't understand why this is considerated a hole. It's a cannon built by the Cloud Village and goes back to the 4th Ninja War. It has the ability to send things to another dimension, among other things.Maybe it's the fact that this cannon wasn't used in the war.
This has its logic because, despite having a destructive power, it's very slow and is not practical in a common war, since hundreds of shinobi are needed to infuse their chakra to the cannon. Meteors were falling for days before it was ready to fire.
- Sasuke's Rinnegan isn't activated

I don't know much about this. It could be simply an error of the animators, like the non-prosthetic arm of Naruto in the epilogue. But i read that if the Rinnegan is not implanted, it can be turn off by the original user, but I'm not sure.
- Breathe on the Moon

Yes, i know, it's stupid, but some people use this as a "hole". In a fantasy universe like Naruto, where they can takes someone's eyes off and on as much ad you want or how they put mythological beasts inside people but +
Breathing on the Moon is unforgivable and unthinkable. Even when we have already seen Naruto travel to other dimensions in manga and nobody asked why he could breath if he was in a alien territory.
- Kurama can separate from Naruto

Naruto is splitting up the Ying and Yang halves of Kurama. He keeps one half and let's the other separate from himself. They don't need the seal anymore and Kurama is willing to help Naruto now.
We have seen them apart from each other in 4th Ninja War, when Kaguya was sealed, all tail beasts were gathered around Hagoromo and Naruto. And Hagoromo asked Yang Kurama to stay with Naruto, who already had Ying Kurama.
So basically we can say that Naruto, thanks to the Ying Yang release, can separate Kurama and take it out of himself.

Or it's simply a physical manifestation of Kurama's chakra but the real one is inside Naruto.
- The 2 years time skip

It was Kishimoto's idea to make Naruto and Hinata together when they were adults, that's why he decided to add a time skip of 2 years between the end of the war and The Last.
Well, i think that were all the holes or at least the most commented.
