only the brave is so much louder than we thought. the song obviously has the subtext of sexuality, but he told us so much more than that. i’m going to analyze it here !!
“pour mercy mercy on me, set fire to history” — he’s going to set fire not only to world history, but the history of HIM. he’s going to set fire to his old image.
“i’m breaking my own rules, im crying like a fool” — he’s breaking out of his shell. a new era, and it will be scary.
“tall glories on the page, short glories on the fade” — no more false headlines. and, again, a new era. his old image—old glory—the guy from the one band—is disappearing.
“i’ve been close enough to touch, but i never cared for love” — he gave just enough to tell us what he couldn’t explicitly say, but, until now, he never put love above all.
“it’s a church of burnt romances, and i’m too far gone to pray” — this is the gayest line, obviously. it’s a sin to be who he is. but the church is also an institution—its bigger than him. he told us that.
“it’s a solo song and it’s only for the brave” i’ll save this for last.
“if the truth fell, darling, you fell, like there ain’t enough dying stars in your sky.” — if the truth came out, he/whoever he’s talking about, his darling, would be destroyed. end then, as if there is t enough they have to worry about already.
“it’s a tall tale and it’s only hello hello no goodbye” - it’s a lie. don’t listen to them. but it’s only how they started, not how they’ll end.
“pour mercy mercy on me, i’ll fall upon my knees” — when it comes out, he’s going to get hate. but he will need your support.
“and they’ll say ‘i told you so, come on when you know you know’” — this was for us. about us. about the after. we’re almost there, but we knew it all along.
“all the lonely shadow dances, from the cradle to the grave” — but in the end, it’s him doing it. this is his storyline, from start to finish.
“it’s a solo song and it’s only for the brave” — this final line...i’m going to tell you what i see when i hear it. i see him on the edge of a cliff. there’s something on the other side of the cavern. and i see him take the leap as the music fades away.
okay that’s it !!
if you liked it here’s my falling analysis ! it’s quite in depth and ppl liked it https://twitter.com/32LTWT/status/1308496516299063297
