There were reports of protesters throwing water bottles, some frozen, and "commercial-grade fireworks" at officers during some of these encounters.

People on both sides were injured.
City Council asked for police de-escalation in a letter to Warren on Sept. 3.

"We do not need any militaristic outfitting and use of pepper balls at this incredibly sensitive time for our community. Peaceful protesting is a critical part of our community grieving process."
That same night, more than 2,000 pepper balls were fired by officers.

So that leads to the questions: What could be done differently? And what might future encounters entail?
