The News & Observer just published a highly misleading article about my office. I had never heard of any investigation involving Mako until News & Observer reporter Dan Kane asked me questions about it last February.
The reporter’s insinuation that I arranged special treatment for anyone is offensive and false. And to have written the story today within weeks of the election, having sat on it since I met with him for an exhaustive interview more than four months ago, is irresponsible.
DOJ attorneys and investigators work hard and with integrity. His implication to the contrary is insulting. Throughout my time in office, MID has aggressively sought out fraud and abuse in our health care system and returned more than $100 million to taxpayers.
