Yesterday I taught a maths lesson that was ok. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't great. I reflected & realised there was too much going on & the actual skill I wanted the chn to learn had got lost. Today I stripped it back. I focused on explicit instruction. It worked!
The quality of language being used by the children was much higher. I was impressed with their reasoning skills and the application of taught skills. There were no bells and whistles in the lesson. Just me, an easel, concrete materials and lots of 'My turn, Your turn'.
The longer I teach the more comfortable I am in the knowledge that explicit instruction is good! It is okay to just tell children stuff! I have a blog coming on how this may look in KS1/EY eventually (cc @NLad84). This thread was inspired by @Teacherglitter.
