Yesterday I taught a maths lesson that was ok. It wasn& #39;t terrible but it wasn& #39;t great. I reflected & realised there was too much going on & the actual skill I wanted the chn to learn had got lost. Today I stripped it back. I focused on explicit instruction. It worked!
The quality of language being used by the children was much higher. I was impressed with their reasoning skills and the application of taught skills. There were no bells and whistles in the lesson. Just me, an easel, concrete materials and lots of & #39;My turn, Your turn& #39;.
The longer I teach the more comfortable I am in the knowledge that explicit instruction is good! It is okay to just tell children stuff! I have a blog coming on how this may look in KS1/EY eventually (cc @NLad84). This thread was inspired by @Teacherglitter.
