Esports as a business is TOUGH. In a vacuum, it's nearly impossible to be profitable.

A group that I have a ton of respect for is the biz team over at @SpacestationGG

The Spacestation is comprised of 3 components: Shonduras' channels, Gaming, and Integrations

1/9
Gaming, as a unit on its own could not have been succesful without first having the foundation in place that @Shonduras and @seanholladay built.

With SSG being in the Ubisoft partner program for as long as they have been + their competitive success, their R6 unit is

2/9
profitable. But it's hard to say for sure if the entire gaming division itself is.

In 2019, Spacestation as a whole did $10,000,000 in revenue. This is absolutely insane.

Where does that come from?

3/9
SS Integrations is a creator agency that does brand deals for the likes of @tannerfox (HotWheels) and @petermckinnon (SquareSpace), to name a few.

But they don't only work with massive creators. They've signed creators with less than 50k subscribers even.

4/9
In addition to the agency side, they also run @vidsummit which is the most popular conference for YouTubers.

(Covid prob altered that for 2020 unfortunately)

SSG's rise in the esports world is no accident. Shonduras was extremely experienced in community building so

5/9
he was able to get things going in pretty short order in the gaming world.

When we started Disrupt, we didn't really know how esports worked as a business.

What SSG, Liquid, and FAZE have shown is that "esports" is just a component of a wider business model.

6/9
It will likely be YEARS before esports on its own is a valid business model.

Much respect to @Shonduras , dude is a cold-emailing, business running, audience identifying, smart MFer and inspires me to step up my own game.

@Unit_Shawn crushes things on the gaming side and won a world Title

8/9
and @seanholladay and Travis Mcbride (@ ?) are creating FANTASTIC brand integrations..seriously their creators do so well with seamless integration.

Great stuff and a really solid business case study.
