What would it look like for the entire film and TV industry to shift wholesale into depictions of police that actually reflect their relationship to the public? What if Olivia Benson quit in protest? What if the BK99 crew realized New Yorkers fundamentally didn't trust them?
I've long been irritated with TV's depictions of cops and quit procedurals about 5 years ago as a result. But now I think the answer isn't to erase cops but to illuminate them. TV made us think they were heroes. It can also show us that they're actually villains.
I just want a show where someone actually says the things that I'm yelling at the screen. Things like "defense attorneys exist to protect the accused against frame jobs like the one you are currently engaged in" and "good cops aren't afraid of IAB."
There's also, "explain to me how you're functionally different from a gang." Oh, and my all time favorite is "perhaps the clearly guilty defendant wouldn't have gotten off scott free if you hadn't openly flouted their civil rights."
Another thing that bugs me is how often cop shows engage in what @Remember_Sarah calls "genocidal language." People do bad things but it doesn't mean they stop being human. Media is very comfortable proclaiming people to be irredeemable forever. It's gross.
