Dominic Calvert-Lewin
A top striker that has very much gone under the radar at Everton in the past couple of seasons. A thread from a fan of football.
Goals against similar aged players in 2019/20 season
Abraham 34 appearances 15 goals, min/goal 148.07
Rashford 31 appearances 17 goals, min/goal 156.18
Gabi Jesus 34 appearances 14 goals, min/goal 144.71
Calvert-Lewin 36 appearances 13 goals, min/goal 204.61
Now he is the worst out of these three however he was playing for a much worse side and his post lockdown form was not great. He appeared in 9 games starting 8 and not scoring a single goal. He achieved those 13 goals in 27 appearances which is a much better ratio.
This is quite a good return for a striker. A goal every other game is kind of the benchmark for a decent level striker. I did make an excuse for his post lockdown form but you can see the potential there already. His goalscoring also significantly improved under Ancelotti.
Shooting success and xG in 2019/20 season
Abraham 17%, xG- 18.08(+3.08)
Rashford 17.9%, xG- 19.50(+2.50)
Gabi Jesus 13.9%, xG- 21.02 (+7.02)
Calvert-Lewin 15.3%, xG- 16.11(+3.11)
xG gives an indication of the quality of chances a player receives. Out performing it is very good because it shows that you have individual brilliance Underperforming shows worse finishing. It basically shows the level of a players finishing based on the chances they receive.
Ok so his xG is not amazing, what it shows is he should have scored 16 goals last season. It shows he needs to work on his finishing a bit which it seems like he has done thus far this season. But it does give credit to him showing that he is getting in the right positions.
Why I’m writing this thread
I’m not saying he’s better than any of these players, what I’m pointing out is he is actually quite underrated. In a poor Everton side with just him and Richarlison as attacking threats 13 goals at 22 is a really decent return.
He has already started this season well with 4 goals in two games including a hattrick. I think there is definitely more to come from Calvert-Lewin at only 23 years old. Everton look a good side this season so if he can get 20 goals, I think that would be an excellent return.
