Pre-lunch time, we're checking in on some of the poster presentations from #EASD2020. First up, Dr Meera Ladwa discusses how fat in the pancreas affects insulin release differently in black African and white European men.
Dr Ladwa studied the insulin levels of men from both ethnicities after a meal, and used MRI scans to discover the levels of fat in the pancreas #EASD2020
After meals, the levels of glucose and insulin were similar in both groups. Pancreatic fat and insulin sensitivity were also similar #EASD2020
However, what was interesting was the LINKS between these factors. Dr Ladwa found that insulin secretion was higher but insulin sensitivity was lower in people with higher levels of pancreatic fat #EASD2020
However, these links are weaker in black African men. This suggests that pancreatic fat plays a different role in the development of type 2 diabetes than in white Europeans. This knowledge will help us refine our prevention and treatment approaches in the future #EASD2020
