let's talk about pink tax: a way of subtle discrimination, shall we?(a thread)
what's pink tax you ask?
it's the cost of being a woman to be simple. It's not a metaphor but the actual MONETARY COST. It's the tax paraphrased with different names to hide the fact that products that are designed for women is more expensive than that of generic male products.
let's now go back in time, when GST was introduced in India, financial express reports & I quote, 'the tax on sanitary pads was a whopping 12%'.
Still don't believe it?
Let's take an example of New York in the same case study where personal care products for women were 48% more expensive than that for men.
How does it even affect you?
If you look outside the privileged world, gender pay gap exists. This disparity in income in means that women(including people from trans community) who are by-default paid less, are supposed to PAY MORE for the same products than well paid men.
Dept. of consumer affairs, NY has found out that 'girl toys' cost an average 2%-13% more than 'boys toys' that are the SAME other than their COLOUR! how ridiculous?
A report by bankrate mentions that 'razors, shaving cream, jeans, children’s toys, or even laxatives, making items cost more just because they are targeted towards women is discrimination.'
so the next time you're at your supermarket and see a generic product with identical value, go for it instead of items that cost more just because they are aimed towards a specific group. This increases a chance for your govt. to remove luxury taxes on feminine hygiene products.
