I'm reading this Jacobin piece that is all REOPEN schools because poor kids aren't learning well remotely at the same time they *magically* propose making sure only young people get coronavirus somehow... 🤔
If you don't trust government to put forward money to catch kids up once virus is under control then how do you think the government will magically & artificially keep the healthy & youth away from high risk & older people? 🧐
JFC Jacobin piece the professor interviewed is saying the United States should follow the Swedish model.

1st of all Sweden only has as many people as LA County.
2) Sweden has a completely different more collective culture.
3) JFC what is this piece.
I'm sorry what? Did he write this nonsense? Sweden has one of highest death rates per capita in Europe.

"For example, day care centers and schools were never closed for children aged one to fifteen, with zero COVID-19 deaths as a result and only a few hospitalizations."
*Maybe* you can reach herd immunity with 10 million people in some fancy fashion that minimizes fatalities but United States is 330 million people and has dozens of major cities. It is WILDLY inappropriate to imply they are at all .
I'm sorry WHAT. Did this MOFO actually say this? Is he saying South Dakota & Florida are *models*. How does this guy have a job teaching at Harvard Medical?

"The Swedish age-targeted approach is similar to the strategy used in South Dakota and the current strategy in Florida."
Ugh this guy is off his rocker. Lockdowns protected essential workers while us unemployed were paid *generous amounts* to stay home through July.

"Yes, I think the lockdown is the worst assault on the working class in half a century, and especially on the urban working class"
What Yih & Kuldorff propose is a complete & utter fantasy.

"I don’t mean to minimize the difficulties of keeping elders safe, particularly in communities where families tend to live in multigenerational households" 😒 You just did Dr. Yih...
Kulldorf's brilliant idea for my family where my mom, aunt, uncle, & 85 year old grandma live together is put grandma in a hotel and let the youth party! 🤦🏾‍♀️

"Empty hotel rooms could be used to temporarily house older people from multigenerational households."
Is this a socialist magazine or a *national socialist magazine* because she's talking about "liberal elites" and talking about small business as somehow having same interests as working class. Hey Dr Yih, just keep unemployment rolling & bailout small business.
OK let me do some number crunching so you'll see what death rate is for their ideal of "let people under 65 do whatever!".

There are 278 million Americans under 65. Let's say herd immunity is 70%. Death rate for people 20-40 is 1/2000 so let's (incorrectly) use that across board
What would death toll be to get to herd immunity via infections of only under 65s be? (And this would still be low estimate bc death rates are higher for people in 40s & 50s.)

Using those numbers 389,200 Americans under 65 would have to die to get to herd immunity.
Let's be precise:

89.3 million Americans between 20-39, death rate 0.02%:
125,000 deaths of 20 & 30 year olds.

40.8 million in their 40s, death rate of 4/1000:
114,000 deaths of people in their 40s.

42.4 million in their 50s, death rate 1.3%:
385,840 deaths of 50 somethings.
20.6 million American between 60-64, my source counts all 60s together, so I'm just gonna use guess here of 2.45% death rate: 353,290 deaths.

(Death rate of 60-69 is 3.6%). https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/coronavirus-age-sex-demographics/
So let's say because 90% of coronavirus deaths have been above 55 so far, they say anyone under 50 just do what you want:

Then using my numbers, assuming 70% eventually get infected: 239,000 people die between ages of 20 & 49.

Now I didn't even get into fact some children die!
But hey why wait until there's a vaccine or super low rates before socializing more? Only 239,000 Americans in peak adult years would have to die to reach herd immunity via natural infection!

According to CDC so far 15,676 people have died between ages of 15-54.
Dr. Yih says her approach is fine because "Workers must have access to personal protective equipment, COVID-19 testing, and sick pay."

Hey Yih you know who is president? We do not have enough testing, sick pay, or even n95s for medical let alone essential workers.
"Patient care should be handled by those having had COVID-19 in the past."

Oh really? Sounds nice because only 2-5% of the US has had coronavirus.
This is what they end with. Zero acknowledgment that THEIR strategy will inevitably cause more deaths of working class & people of color because we grow up with more polluted air, more crowded housing, and poorer medical access.
Yours truly went to *5* raves in February. I have been socially distancing since March, so I know you can too.

Just keep your 6 feet, hang out outside to see friends, and expand your "bubble" of people you can see inside very carefully. Get tested when you want to see grandma!
I found this very useful chart from CDC about age related death risk from coronavirus.

It's awful that the CDC has been so muzzled because imagine if this flyer was posted around, people would not just be like I'm not 80 I'll be fine or "teachers & parents will be fine"
