You know what? I'm gonna do a little thread breaking down those Clive Barker announcements, because there's some good stuff in there. Let's start with the novel, DEEP HILL. 1/
According to an interview with his site earlier this year, DEEP HILL was in the third and final draft, so I imagine we'll see this first. This started out a story called SCAREBABY before evolving into something much bigger. 2/
From the information available, it sounds like DEEP HILL concerns "a world of waste" and is essentially a Halloween dark fantasy entwined with eco-horror. Which sounds *pure* Barker, so I'm very down. 3/
Next, the novella MERCY AND THE JACKAL. Sounds entirely new, but it actually dates back to 1999, when it was meant to be a series of stories about a little girl named Mercy and a wrestler named the Jackal.
Now, the collection FEAR ETERNAL is really, really enticing. One, I think we've all been waiting for a new Clive Barker short story collection for. along time, and this one is set to include a mix of out-of-print, unpublished and brand-new stuff...
Barker had completed a new collection titled BLACK IS THE DEVIL'S RAINBOW back in 2011 and delivered it to HarperCollins before they dropped him from their adult imprint. I'd imagine much of that will be included. BUT, here are some things Barker's already confirmed... 6/
In the interview with Revelations earlier in the year, Barker said that OOP material for FEAR ETERNAL will include THE NIGHTBREED CHRONICLES. Little pieces of fiction Barker had written about each of the Breed that have been long unavailable and will finally be republished. 7/
In addition to that, the collection will also republish the TORTURED SOULS stories that were written back in 2001 for the accompanying action figure series. These were republished a few years ago, but that edition is hard to come by and their inclusion here is exciting. 8/
It's worth mentioning that BLACK IS THE DEVIL'S RAINBOW had also been set to include a Pinhead short story called "Heaven's Reply." While that was expanded on into the novella HELLRAISER: THE TOLL, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the original story included. 9/
If I were to include one bucket list pick, I'd hope for Barker's treatment to VALERIE ON THE STAIRS, which reads exactly like a BOOKS OF BLOOD story. That being Clive's first attempt at a "short story for television" is part of why I'm so excited for Hulu's BOOKS OF BLOOD. /END
