Illini Chabad is deeply disappointed by the results of tonight’s @ILStudentGov BDS vote. The University of Illinois should be a place of inclusivity, safety, open-mindedness, and equality.

Rather, the Illinois Student Government (ISG) has once again used its power
to exclude, bully, and intimidate Jewish students. ISG’s behavior does not represent Illini’s values, but rather deepens division within the Illini community.

The resolution was written purely to back Jewish students in a corner. Jewish students should never have to choose
between standing up for social and racial justice while also having to shed their Jewish identity and their connection to the Jewish homeland to do so. Fighting for the rights of one marginalized community should not come at the expense of another marginalized group
Students who feel that antisemitism at U of I has gotten out of hand, know you are not alone. We are here for you and you always have a place at Chabad. I am available if anyone wants to process.

As we are standing in the days between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, the highest
holidays in the Jewish year, let us look towards a positive year ahead. We cannot allow a group of students to make us feel less proud of who we are. Rather, we need to take time to dedicate ourselves to add in Jewish action and Jewish Pride. A little light can expel a lot of
darkness.

Over the next few weeks, come join us and celebrate our Jewish life and the Jewish community, learn more about Israel, and put your energy into positive action.
