1. Today, white America once again failed to pursue justice for a brutally murdered African-American, Breonna Taylor.

Meanwhile, the White House banned anti-racist education by EO, and Trump refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power.

And then there's SCOTUS.
2. You can be sure Trump and McConnell are seeking a compliant, politicized court that will rubber-stamp a Trump dictatorship. Roberts' and maybe even Gorsuch's concerns about legitimacy may be a hindrance, but don't count on it.

And say goodbye to the ACA, Roe, and Obergefell
3. There is much legitimate outrage over the rank hypocrisy of Republicans seeking to fill a Supreme Court vacancy in an election year after voting has started, much later in the game than when they made up a precedent to block President Obama's appointment of Merrick Garland.
4. We need to channel that outrage. @AndrewLSeidel believes we can win the fight to keep RBG's seat open until after the election, but, even if we can, that doesn't matter if Trump successfully cheats to hold on to power. And he will try to cheat by all available means.
5. We have armed militia nuts roaming the streets, and we are likely to see police and security forces deployed to "protect" the election process--by intimidating voters and scaring them away from the polls.
6. Even here in Multnomah County, OR, conspiracy theory believing vigilantes set up roadblocks and stopped people fleeing raging wildfires they claimed to believe were set by "antifa."

This kind of violence will proliferate from now through November, and, probably, after.
7. Because while Biden will almost certainly handily defeat Trump, and a blue wave is likely, Trump does not have the character to concede a loss, which is an important election ritual. His supporters won't simply give up either. This is fascism. Things are going to get ugly.
8. What to do about it? First, as @nadinevdVelde says, survive. Plan for contingencies. Protect the vulnerable as you are able.

Of course, vote, GOTV, help people vote. But don't think voting will be the end of it. We're in a cold civil war, and the Right is trying to heat it up
9. I can't tell you where exactly things go from here. No one can. All I can say, as someone who knows a few things about authoritarianism, is that we're in for a bumpy ride, with things having devolved as far as they have.

We can't afford to be complacent.
10. So stay safe out there, be ready for the worst, and fight and resist on whatever fronts you can.

Remember that there are far more Americans supporting democracy and justice than there are American fascists. They know it too; that's why they're ramping u the violence.
11. But we can still take comfort in the fact that the fascists are far outnumbered. And we're not simply going to let them destroy all the progress America has made in equality and civil rights. As the late, great Leonard Cohen sang, "Democracy is coming to the USA."
12. This thread was off the cuff. That's all I've got tonight. I'm scared, and it's okay to be scared. But I won't stop speaking out against American fascism and doing what I can to fight it. If we all do that, we'll win in the end.
