My mentor told me a good description of today’s lefties, especially students & yungins—they are ‘Neo Pythagorean’s’ in that they believe if perfection is possible (even weakly so) it is compulsory to achieve it.
Rather than the ought implies can of Kant, they believe that can implies ought.
In other words, the idea is that if something is theoretically *possible* even if it is absurd, that that is the standard against which all real life should be judged
This wasn’t supposed to be a compliment lol
The point is not people ‘demanding the impossible’ as concerns the emancipatory & the current horizon that limits our imagination, it is that they demand individuals conform to ideals become they assume it’s possible for them to do so
If across history & cultures, 80% of people do one thing/act one way in a situation. 16% act another way/do another thing. 1% does it/acts the way we want. And 3% vary between the three, how useful is possibility ?
It’s basically meaningless to say in that situation that it is ‘possible’ to act a certain way, so people should, if 96% reliably don’t act that way, 1% do, and the other 3% vary.
I chose these numbers as examples but they’re based on a real case lol.
