I’m in downtown Portland tonight reporting for the @nytimes on demonstrations after a Kentucky grand jury announced it would not charge three police officers in the killing of Breonna Taylor.
This is night, what, 110 of protests here in Portland? Someone tell me if I’m wrong, please. I’d guess about 150 people here right now.
Wow wearing glasses in the rain with a COVID mask at a protest is not fun.
There’s a drum circle. Someone had a trumpet earlier but I don’t know where they got to.
“You don’t listen to Black voices. Respect Black women. I should not have to be demanding respect.”
Crowd’s grown pretty substantially here as the rain has subsided. Looking like about 300, maybe more.
There’s a separate, smaller gathering on the opposite side of the Justice Center, the entrance to the Portland Police Bureau. This has been declared an unlawful assembly. Windows above the entrance are broken and there’s a bit of graffiti.
Police are declaring a riot out here. There has been plenty of shouting, some graffiti and a very short burning fire on the plywood posted up on the Justice Center.
Another small fire set at one of the awnings in front of the Portland Police Building. Police are issuing dispersal orders.
Someone chucked a Molotov cocktail at the Portland Police and State Patrol who are out here. Police fired back tear gas. All the confrontation has happened along Second Avenue. Protestors are still gathered and chanting on Third.
Looks like there are some federal officers in the center of that horseshoe there. Just sprayed something into the air, some kind of gas.
Officers have moved up a block to try to disperse the crowd.
Police are marching up Main to push the crowd. Shooting something spicy. I tripped in this video, excuse me.
Police marched the crowd west, all the way up to 14th and Salmon. Folks sort of bounced back east on Salmon.
I’m leaving, gotta do my day job of writing about kids tomorrow. Be safe, Portland.
