I have a long-standing theory about the culture wars and was going to write current book about it but decided #InsurgentAcademics needed to be written first. But it goes something like this... https://twitter.com/roopikarisam/status/1308954682728026115
Much to their chagrin, the right wing realized they’d never win the war on culture — in the sense of arts and letters — of the ‘90s. The multiculturalism train had left the station. Multiculturalism was never good enough for many of us, but it was threatening enough for them.
So they settled for accelerating the defunding of public higher education, convenient as we were also seeing increasing numbers of students of color, and shifted focus from a war over culture to a war over information. And won.
The demise of the FCC’s Fairness Doctrine helped this along, and we saw the rise of right-wing radio & news stations. While Fox News is on cable and would likely have been able to do what it liked regardless of the FCC, it gained audience and market share from right-wing media.
And there we began seeing that the right-wing managed to do postmodernism better than any theorist academia could produce.
The idea that there was no Truth was for wimps. The right wing would manage to convince an alarming percentage of the population that there weren’t any FACTS either. The war on information was won.
And here we are, in the fascist regime, reading a statement about racism that so perverts the lived reality that many of us experience that words don’t even mean what we think they mean anymore.
Okay, good. Now I don’t have to write that book anymore.
