Moments like this help me to understand why our grandparents and ancestors had so much faith in God. They had to because they knew they couldn’t depend on people or systems who didn’t see them to make them whole.
Think about all the hymns & songs our grandparents sang. Think about the climate during those times. Who but God could they hope & depend on?

“My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood & righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus' name”
Our grandparents didn’t have the education or access we have now. EVERYTHING they got, every opportunity, every rising sun, every dollar, every meal, was b/c of their faith. They were SOLELY reliant on their source vs a system that was structured for them to always struggle.
When our grandparents and ancestors testified that God brought them from a mighty long way, I never considered the way. Slavery, lynchings, Jim Crow, discrimination and injustice at every hand.
That prayer for the hedge of protection, that prayer to keep us from hurt, harm and danger, that prayer to protect us from dangers seen AND unseen...THAT was what our grandparents had. Their faith. Their word. And after today and moments like this, I finally get it.
