I cried for #BreonnaTaylor and her family today.

St. Louis is known to some as the place where Dred Scott petitioned the Supreme Court for his freedom in 1854. The courthouse where he was denied freedom is still a staple of our skyline. 1/
A statue of Dred and Harriet Scott stands on the Eastern side of the courthouse. I assume it faces East because one of the reasons Scott sued for his freedom was his brief stay in Illinois, a free state. 2/
Scott comes to mind because the infamous words of Judge Roger Taney’s opinion ring in my head every time my people are denied justice in this country, “the negro has no rights in which the white man is bound to respect.” 3/
It’s hard not to feel hopeless when the existence of my people in this country is marked by generations of are denials....of justice, access, equity, wealth. And I wonder if my son will feel the same hopelessness I feel when he’s an adult. 4/
I’ll cry tonight, but tomorrow is a new day. We fight to live another day. And we live to fight another day. And hopefully, one day this country will be a better place for my son and generations after him. 5/
