I'm out at the Capitol building in Denver tonight for anticipated protests in response to the decision not to directly charge any officers with Breonna Taylor's killing. So far a few dozen are here. I'll keep this thread updated tonight. https://www.denverpost.com/2020/09/23/breonna-taylor-police-officer-charged/
Here's what it looks like now
The crowd is growing steadily here. Sounds like organizers plan to rally here for a while, them march.
LJ, who asked to be identified by her initials to avoid any trouble with her employer, said she attended tonight because she is frustrated. "I came because of the hurt, the frustration, the overall pain that once again the system has failed another person of color," she said.
Tay Anderson is addressing the crowd and calls on federal authorities to bring charges against the officers involved.
I'd guess a couple hundred folks are out here now, speeches are continuing.
Two police trucks with officers hanging on the sides just rolled up to the protest, not clear why, but they stopped for a few minutes then moved on. Crowd jeered them.
As this point in the night, this demonstration has been completely peaceful
The group has moved into the street and is marching
The scene. A few hundred here I guesstimate.
Chants in the street
The protest is headed along the 16th Street Mall
Looks like police are blocking some roads as the march continues, so far seem to be hanging back
The protest has stopped at the federal building for more speeches.
Looks like they're headed back out on the streets now
Back at the Capitol
Sounds like the main event is wrapping up here. Meanwhile, in Louisville https://twitter.com/AP/status/1308955614350016516?s=19
Tay Anderson asks protesters to go home and urges everyone to remain peaceful.
Much of the group just left, a smaller cohort remains at the Capitol
A car drove into the protest area and was surrounded
Car hit a protester
The person who was hit, Kate, said she is not badly hurt. Her wrist is scraped up.
The confrontation began when the driver pulled into the protest area and was stopped by protesters. The protesters surrounded the vehicle and told the driver to turn around. They shouted at each other, then the driver accelerated into the protesters after a few tense minutes
Police say they have one detained
This is Kate and her messed up bike
Here are some of the moments before the driver accelerated into the crowd
Here is when the driver first pulled up to the protesters tonight in Denver, you can hear people urging him to turn around. During the next few minutes, I saw the driver shaking his head in apparent disbelief and using his cell phone, perhaps to take pictures.
