Disgraceful night for the UK govt & Labour. Starmer sacks 3 shadow ministers who voted against the #OverseasOperationsBill, designed to protect UK military from war crimes prosecutions. It& #39;s an impunity bill & former DPP Starmer whipped his MPs to back it. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/sep/23/minister-says-labour-took-uk-into-wars-during-commons-debate">https://www.theguardian.com/politics/...
Until now the ICC - with a preliminary investigation underway into alleged UK war crimes in Iraq - has backed off after the UK said it was conducting its own investigations. Since then the UK has closed the Historical Investigations Unit & now passed the #OverseasOperationsBill.
This is the kind of action that has African leaders screaming hypocrisy. If an African state subject to an #ICC preliminary examination passed legislation like the #OverseasOperationsBill, the ICC would open a full investigation within days.
Correction: Starmer whipped his MPs to abstain on the #OverseasOperationsBill but Labour should& #39;ve opposed it instead of playing games around patriotism.
