California people as a person who drove @lyft and @uber I can assure you that you should 100% vote NO on Prop 22 #NoOnProp22
Companies like @uber @lyft @postmates etc. like to say people can set their own hours. To a certain extent that is true BUT the bottom line is that if you want to make ends meet you are going to have to work hours where there is higher demand.
Sure you can work 10am - 3pm every day but you're not gonna pay rent. When you really break down the profitable hours to drive the choices start to dwindle. You either have to drive when a lot of requests are coming in or you have drive when people don't want to drive.
It's like waiting tables. Those Friday and Saturday shifts are how you make ends meet. You work the shitty lunch shift for a little extra money but mostly you want to get those juicy busy dinner nights.
These companies can change how much you make and how much they take out of each ride whenever they want. When I started they took 10%. By the time I stopped they were taking 30%.
The thing about this is that giving rides costs you money. So having to give 30% more rides also means your expenses go up. I had to drive even more to cover the cost of me covering the amount they are taking from me. It nearly doubled how long I had to drive to make ends meet.
If I was actually freelance then I should've been able to negotiate my rates & when they change. I should've been allowed to turn down rides I didn't want to take. I should've been allowed to set my own rates for rides. Drivers aren't allowed to do that. The app is boss/god.
Also, all of this ignores the fact that @lyft and @uber are essentially illegal and just using an outdated law that was used to encourage carpooling/ridesharing during WW2 or some shit.
It also ignores that they're just trying to stay afloat ( @Uber says it lost $8.5 billion in 2019) until self driving cars are allowed. At which point they'll dump all these "Freelancers." Who won't even have unemployment benefits because they are classified as freelancers.
