analysing the lose you to love me music video frame by frame; a thread
in the first frame we see Selena turning on a light in the corner, she was entering a room, but not just any room, it was a religious confession room, mimicking the heart wants what it wants video where Selena confessed all her emotions in front of a mirror
she takes a seat with clear flashes of her facial expressions, at that point it’s clear that Selena is not okay (emotionally)
Selena holds her knees close to her chest, making it clear that she’s not at ease, she keeps turning around as if she wants to make sure that no one else is there
the room gets darker for a few seconds, frames shift quickly and we see Selena in several states of sadness, fear, and anger
this shot is very quick but it’s clear that Selena is crying, she’s hurting, further represented by the sheer darkness of the room
Selena then looks down with teary eyes with a sign of sadness and disappointment, she also covers her face with her hands as a sign of hurt, it’s obvious she’s gone through something traumatic and painful
as we hear the lyrics “this dancing was killing me softly,” Selena is enraged, but also in the back she seems happy, this might symbolise the different emotions she went through during her traumatic experience
she continues to look down as we hear “i needed to hate you to love me” again it’s a sign of her pain and disappointment
during the chorus we see a flash of emotions, also representing her different emotions during her experience, but at the end we are faced with a black screen before continuing the song
the song resumes and as Selena continues telling her story, we see various other emotions
“in two months you replaced us” Selena is visibly angry as she attempts to hit what is presumably a mirror, this could symbolise her anger at the audience for constantly manipulating her story, her anger at her experiences, her anger at herself, or simply her overall anger
Selena begins to feel more at ease as her knees are no longer held close to her chest and her body is less guarded, but she still seems paranoid as she keeps turning around
Selena’s whole body begins shaking as she is rocking back and forth, another sigh of trauma and fear
we see Selena behind a certain pattern like cover, solidifying that it is indeed a confession room, she reaches for something, as if wishing to cover the cameras, this could be a symbol of the media constantly bothering and following her during her darkest times
another array of emotions flash as the song is coming close to the bridge
the song is quiet throughout the bridge, the simple production is put to a halt, all you can hear is Selena’s voice, more proof that the song is just a simple way to Selena telling her story
we see Selena’s teary face through a blurred shaking screen, as if the mirror reflected Selena’s face to her through her teary eyes
before the end of the bridge we see another myriad of emotions such as sadness anger and confusion
after the bridge we see a quick shot of Selena looking up, a symbol of her faith and connection to god throughout her sadness and depression
we see a final burst of Selena’s beautiful emotions as the song comes close to an end
as the song ends, she no longer looks back, she looks us straight in the eyes and says “and now it’s goodbye, it’s goodbye for us” with confidence and a smile on her face, a beautiful ending to the raw and emotional lytlm and a great introduction to the upbeat and inspiring lahn
