From the 1920s to the 1970s, North Carolina had a state sterilization program where 7,600 residents were deemed unable to have children because they were considered “defective, “deviant,” or “feebleminded.”

In the 1960s and 1970s, LA County General Hospital sterilized Spanish-speaking Mexican American women who were working-class.
