There it is, @al_ewing more or less does what CW2 should've done, tell off Tony Stark for being an asshole. Not the first time he's tried to suggest "Maybe Carol had a point" to be honest. https://twitter.com/CaptMarvelNews/status/1308751764448055296
Since this is getting attention, i feel the need to elaborate why Ewing doing this is good writing. In fiction, especially science fiction, wen dealing with high concept stuff that brings various morality issues into question, you actually have to debate the merits of both sides.
The problem with CW2 is that it has already decided who is wrong. That being, Carol is wrong. This is why I don't think people understand why the story sucks. It's not terrible because Carol is the designated hero, she's the designated villain of CW2.
The story from the word go believes Carol is wrong, and every action she takes is made to reinforce she is wrong. That's the reason she is blamed for Rhodey's death and Banner's death despite other people doing it.
Carol has to be wrong, Tony has to be right.
Carol has to be wrong, Tony has to be right.
But if you are actually trying to analyse the question of "If you could see the future, would it be right to try and change it?" You cannot start from the position of "No, never, it's wrong." Sci-Fi requires you to actually look at both sides.
The problem with CW2 is that it is basically Caveman Sci-Fi, the kind that was in the fifties about tampering in God's Domain and how science would kill us all. Every one of those Drive-In b-pictures more or less takes the position that Atomic power is bad and will destroy us.
Now you might agree with that assessment, but if you've already written down the obvious lesson of "The science dude is wrong to want to study the atomic monster because he's an idiot" or "Robots are always evil, don't make them", it's hardly compelling fiction.
Don't get me wrong, I love those movies, but the vast majority are heavy handed in their scripting. The wrong side is very obvious and the message is clear. Maintain the status quo and that is Tony's position in CW2.
If Bendis really wanted to truly discuss the implication of being able to tell the future, he SHOULD have given Carol the benefit of the doubt. He should've allowed her a means to prove her point. He should have given her as many opportunities to have the last word as Stark has.
The story doesn't have to end with Carol being right, but it would've been more compelling, more interesting, less one-sided, if it made us question who WAS right over the course of it. All CW2 does is railroad Carol as the villain to make Tony look good.
Even when Tony breaks several laws, the comic never takes him to task. EVER. It always questions Carol, calls out her actions, but never once forces Tony to admit to his failings. He is always right in everything he does and the comic expects us to cheer him on for it.
This is why I don't understand why everyone is still upset with Carol post-CW2 in the fandom. The comic agrees with you, she's in the wrong & she basically admits it by the end of the book. Bendis railroaded her. You should be upset with how they treated Carol, not Carol herself.
CW2 never gave Carol a chance to speak her piece, allowing Tony Stark to be presented as the hero over and over again, despite his various illegal and immoral actions during the course of it. It was behind Tony's position the whole way and Carol was treated like crap.
Ewing has bothered to finally call out this bullshit for what it is. Even if he doesn't agree with Carol's stance, he does show that Stark is an asshole in that moment and that he wasn't being fair. If you want to analyze a high concept idea, analyze it!
