Important thread. Blaming capitalism for climate change isn't, in fact, helpful. Anthropogenic climate change is the unintended consequence of industrial civilisation, not a particular economic paradigm. https://twitter.com/Evollaqi/status/1308790530768359429
Climate change isn't happening because of the greed of a bunch of evil corporations. It's a side effect of humans trying to make their lives better. To this end, modernity's material achievements are unprecedented.
So what does the problem of climate change mean from an ethical standpoint? Clearly, we haven't done a good job of creating an ecologically integrated civilisation.
But does this mean we should retreat from modernity, as some deep green ecologists would desire?
I'd argue instead instead that the solution lies, ironically, in technological advancement. As @Evollaqi noted, clean energy actually presents the possibility of moving beyond fossil fuels.
Geoengineering is another necessity. We have to admit to ourselves the power that we do have, and then embrace the moral responsibility that comes with that power. Technological advancement rooted in a more solid ethical framework is the way forward!
