Playing games, binging series, playing a bit more games… Our routine chilling activities are not things we really think about. But in medieval times, the life of a peasant wasn't like ours at all. This #HistoricalWednesday, we’re checking out peasant life!
True, peasant life revolved around the farming calendar: trying to grow enough food to survive the winter. However, physical labor was not all that they did -- there were lots of holidays, and times when there was just little to do but wait for the harvesting season.
Regardless of their poverty or lack of technology, humanity always finds a way to have fun! They might not have had Netflix but little theatrical plays were staged in villages. Scatological humor was considered the height of funniness and fart jokes were especially appreciated.
In France and England, dice games were popular. One was the needlessly complicated “Hazard”. In Great Britain they played Skittles, an outdoorsy bowling where you’d try to knock down nine pins with a round disk called a cheese.
An early version of sorts of football and golf were also played during the Middle Ages. And regardless of the game though, social meetings often devolved into wrestling in the end -- quite possibly because of the amount of beer and ale that was passing around.
So yes. Peasants. They worked hard. Had no social security. But man, they knew how to have fun... End of thread!
