You’re probably going to hear the claim that “People of Hope” inspired Margaret Atwood’s novel, The Handmaid’s Tale. But the timeline for this claim does not make sense. https://bit.ly/3hRLGp7
Atwood showed The New Yorker’s Rebecca Mead her notes, including a newspaper clipping about "a Catholic congregation in New Jersey being taken over by a fundamentalist sect in which wives were called “handmaidens”—a word that Atwood had underlined.” https://bit.ly/3hRLGp7
The AP report for that newspaper article was published on October 30, 1985.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” was published in August 1985.

Barring the existence of time travel, there is no way a newspaper article from the end of October 1985 can influence the creation of a book published in August 1985. https://bit.ly/3hRLGp7
