Have you ever felt confuse about the difference between these two words? When to use should and when to use shall? If you have, then let’s learn with EEC.
Both shall and should are auxiliary verbs that accompany the main verb or what is commonly called as modals. Basically should is the past tense of shall. However, should and shall function differently. Want to know more where the differences are? KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN!!!
SHOULD
β€’When you want to ask a question, β€œshould” can be used to ask something that is placed at the beginning of the word. For example, when you want to buy a book but you want to ask your friends for advice, then you can say β€œShould i buy this book?”
β€’In conditional sentences, you can replace "if" by using β€œshould”. For example "Should you buy this book, you may good in cooking". The sentence has the same meaning as the sentence "If you buy this book, you may be good in cooking".
β€’β€œShould” can also be used to express a suggestion that must be conducted. For example, when your friend will have an exam next week, you can give suggestions with "You should study for your exam next week".
β€’At last, if you want to state a possibility that will happen, then β€œshould” can be used like "If you study before your exam, you should get A for it".
SHALL
β€’When you want to express an event that is to come then β€œshall” can be used to describe it. For example "I shall change my schedule".
β€’β€œShall” can also be used to express a must as well as β€œshould”. However, the β€œshall” is used to express a necessity in formal matters. For example, "You shall respect your parents".
β€’When offering suggestions, β€œshall” be used more politely than β€œshould”. For example "Shall I lend you a book?".
β€’Compared to β€œshould”, β€œshall” be considered stronger to indicate certainty. For example "I shall return the book tomorrow".
How is it? Do you understand it now? Then we expect you to be more clear about these. EEC would like to say thank you for all of you who already read this thread and see you in another educational thread provide by EEC. YEAY!
