In this system, players for one team would wear numbers 1-11, and the opposition would wear 12-22. Earliest records of this date back to August 25, 1928 when played away to Sheffield Wednesday.
Though the Football League Management League Committee initially voted against the wearing numbered shirts, in 1939 they allowed teams to wear numbered shirts with both teams wearing 1-11 and numbers decided by position.
