I need fellow Lutherans to remember that the only reason we even know Bonhoeffer’s name is because he was fairly unique.

The vast majority of the Lutheran church happily went along with the Nazis. Or were Nazis themselves.
Have you ever asked yourself why we say “Bonhoeffer resisted Hitler” instead of “the whole Lutheran Church in Germany resisted Hitler”?

It’s because they mostly didn’t. The pastors mostly said faith and politics don’t mix, and focused on personal piety.
With the benefit of hindsight, the two times the Lutheran Church made our gravest errors were the time we said “let’s stay away from divisive politics” and the time we said “law and order are important.” (The peasants rebellion)
I feel like this might maybe have relevance for us today.
