It was on a road trip that me and my dear friend @singhamardeep decided to listen to an audiobook instead of music. We agreed that the book must be about science and should give us fodder for thought and topics to discuss during the journey. 1/n
We wanted to listen to 'What If' (scientific answers to absurd hypothetical questions) by Randall Munroe but unfortunately it was not available on @audible_com India so we finally went for ' A Short History of Nearly Everything' by Bill Bryson 2/n
It is a great book and gave us so many things to ponder upon and talk about. But the topic which we were most fascinated were the scale of things in our observable universe. From our supercluster to our galaxy to our planets to amoeba and neutrons. 3/n
It is mind boggling to really think of the sizes ranging from 'billions of lightyear' diameter to millionth of a nanometre. The author tried to explain the scale in terms of football stadium to a pea and size of White House to Trump's brain (of course not, go read the book) 4/n
I and Amar discussed if there is some way these things can be depicted on one large grand canvas making people to realize the enormity of things and our places in this vastness. The physical real life representation of such a thing is impossible because for people 5/n
to appreciate the sizes and scale our universe would require kilometres of canvas. We thought the best way to do is in the digital/VR format with a slider like option to really see and compare sizes. Anyways it was a fascinating discussion and a super fun road trip. 6/n
Cut to present : I have always been a great fan and follower of two people on the internet. These two have expanded my thoughts and knowledge on almost everything they have tried to explain from topics of science to philosophy to psychology 7/n
These two distinguished gentleman are Tim Urban @waitbutwhy with his blog 'Wait But Why' and Philipp Dettmer for his youtube channel 'Kurzgesagt' @Kurz_Gesagt' And today Tim Urban announced this great app ' Universe' in collaboration with Philipp Dettmer's Kurzgesagt 8/n
And yes this app does exactly what we discussed on that road trip. Universe shows your place in, of course, the Universe with a slider option to check out and inform about the tiniest particles to the epic galaxies. 9/n
Just want to thank Tim Urban and Philipp Dettmer for this and for letting us be a part of their fun room. You are the best. Keep rocking. Cheers Check out this blog post by Tim Urban for the launch of this app : https://waitbutwhy.com/2020/09/universe.html 10/n
