those “I don’t understand why the shield team couldn’t stay together forever” tweets lowkey confuse me. haven’t you watched the same show? in s2, hunter was the first to point out that shield was a JOB. it doesn’t mean the team wasn’t a family, just that their priorities changed.
enoch himself pointed it out “yet this is the nature of family, isn't it? I have seen it countless times on countless worlds. people arrive, so we celebrate, and people leave us, so we grieve”, a family isn’t meant to stay together forever, no matter how heartbreaking it might be
may wanted to have a child with andrew, and was ready to put aside her job for that. when she enrolled at the academy and became a teacher in the finale she somehow did what she’d always wanted to do: step back from the field. losing coulson only emphasized this need to step back
fitzsimmons have lost each other countless of times. they’ve been separated by time, space, death. it has been made pretty clear since season3 that they were going to step back at some point, and live their life (and build a family) in pethshire. they finally did, and deserved it
daisy found a family within shield. she found a father figure in coulson, a mother figure in may, countless brothers and sisters. she also found her sister along the way, and her stepping back to explore space with sousa and kora was a beautiful testimony of personal growth, too.
mack and elena were meant to have a greater place within shield, together. mack becoming the director just feels right, because he’s somehow always been overshadowed within the team but he was a damn fine director. elena staying by his side was only logical, and what she deserved
and finally, coulson was tired. he probably lived through more life and death experiences than most people combined, and he had the right to decide for himself for once (as opposed to during 5b). an open ending was only logical for this character, who started the whole show.
the shield team will always love each other deeply and nothing is ever gonna change that. they will always consider each other as family, but it doesn’t mean families don’t evolve differently when members go on with their own lives. that’s just how life is ❤️
