It was my 2nd week at work when this teenage girl was rushed in, mere looking at her, you would know she was a sickle cell warrior..

She was almost white, we did her PCV(Blood Percentage) and it was 12%, this girl needed blood ASAP!

But there was none in sight...

#OdogwuTales
Parents were poor and didn't have funds readily available...

We checked her blood group and it matched mine, my PCV was 42%, I asked them to bleed me...

I've never met them before, I just saw her and had compassion, the father fell on the floor crying but something happened...
I don't have large veins so the nurses had to prick me more than 6 times in 6 different areas with that big needle...

At a point the father said, doc it's ok, if they can't secure it...i understand

In pains, I just said "ONE MORE TIME" and God willing, it worked...
The girl was SS which is the most common type of "Sickle Cell Disease" but this morning it was revealed Laycon is SC and many people are confused

So let's Talk "SC GENOTYPE"

First Of All...

- The blood is made up of red blood cells (RBC) that are "round like" and flexible...
The flexible nature of the BBC allows it carry oxygen to different parts of the body.

• What Is SICKLE CELL?
- It's an inherited disorder that makes RBC to be shaped like a "Sickle" and rigid.

- It's inherited because each parent donates 1 genotype each to form the child's own
- The sickle rigid shape doesn't allow blood to flow freely.

• What Are The Types Of SICKLE CELL?

- There is something called "Haemoglobin" in RBCs, it's a protein that carries oxygen in blood.

- The different types of Sickle Cell is caused by a defect in the haemoglobin.
1. HAEMOGLOBIN SS

- This is the most common type of Sickle Cell disease and it occurs when one inherits copies of "Hemoglobin S" from both parents giving the "SS" genotype.

- Individuals with the SS genotype experience the worst symptoms of Sickle Cell at a higher rate.
2. HAEMOGLOBIN SC

- It's the second most common type of Sickle Cell Disease. It occurs when you inherit Haemoglobin C from one parent and Haemoglobin S from another parent giving genotype "SC".

- They have similar symptoms to those of SS but its less severe and less common.
3. HAEMOGLOBIN SB+

- It's also called "Beta Thalassemia.
Symptoms are not severe and it's not very common.

4. HAEMOGLOBIN SB0

- Also called "Beta-Zero Thalassemia".
It has similar symptoms with "SS" but its more severe and the chances of survival most times are poor. It's rare
There are also Haemoglobin SD, SE and SO but these ones are very rare and usually do not have symptoms.

Today that patient of mine is a model and she is doing exceptionally well.

Watching Laycon do his thing on BBNaija gives me so much joy...These guys are WARRIORS!!!
We live in a world with humans who have no humanity!

A woke world who only knows how to tear down and never build up.

The only way to keep humanity alive is by your good deeds.

Whenever you can...Show compassion and make the world, your circle a better place.

Remain Blessed!
And...KNOW YOUR GENOTYPE!!!
