I find it irritating that any examples given in this thread of mixed Armenians embracing their culture are dismissed as “anecdotes”. We’re real life examples of the topic in discussion. It’s obviously difficult for someone like me to remove my feelings and comment objectively but https://twitter.com/aramisharam/status/1308501069362655232
The treatment of mixed Armenians isn’t mentioned here either. The way in which my brother and I were treated by the Armenian community growing up made us hate being Armenian.. and then those same people expect us to marry back into the culture.
I eventually fell in love with my Armenianness, but to this day I have days when I struggle. Purists will attack me for being Black, for being Parskahye. Imagine rejection from a community you adore so much.. a community from a country you’d give your life for. It can break you.
So don’t go blaming mixed Armenians and their DNA or their upbringing when they turn their back on the community. Ask them why they are doing so. I’m pretty sure you’ll hear a lot of the same answers.
I myself have never actually dated an Armenian guy, but mainly because there were like 3 in London when I was growing up 😂 I actually love the idea of marrying an Armenian, but the anxiety about whether his family would accept me will never go. Would it break our relationship?
Please don’t be dismissive of the mixed race experience. The things we endured growing up is real life trauma. Even today I am accused of cultural appropriation when I wear Taraz. I can post a whole video speaking in Armenian and people will laugh at my pronunciations.
So instead of obsessing over preventing it, why don’t we just accept that people marrying outside of the culture is inevitable and that those who fear extinction and obsess over blood purity are the ones doing the most damage. They are responsible for alienating actual Armenians.
Sure it’s an anonymous account, but this isn’t the first time I’ve had this and it won’t be the last. These attitudes are learnt.
